How to Watch Liverpool vs. Norwich City

The 2019-2020 English Premier League season is upon us, and it begins Friday with a match featuring the reigning champion of Europe. UEFA Champions League winner Liverpool faces newly promoted Norwich City on Friday, August 9, at 3:00 p.m EDT (NBC Sports Network, Universo; streaming on NBC Sports LiveFuboTVUniverso NOW) at historic Anfield.

Despite their coronation as the kings of Europe and a historically great season in England, the Reds of Liverpool still managed to fall short of Premier League champion Manchester City by the thinnest of margins. Liverpool finished its campaign with 97 points, the third-most points ever scored in a single Premier League season, but fell one short of City’s 98, the second-most points in a season. While Liverpool has managed plenty of continental success in the last few decades, it’s yet to be crowned Premier League champion since the league’s inception in 1992. The Reds last won an English First Division title in 1990.

But in the wake of such a close call last season, Liverpool and its manager, Jurgen Klopp, will enter the new season focused on achieving domestic success. As last season showed, it will take a monumental effort to overcome Manchester City. Though if there’s one team with the talent to do it, it’s Liverpool.

Mo Salah and Sadio Mane have proved to be two of the world’s best attacking wingers in recent years and perhaps the most dangerous duo in English soccer. Combined with Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino, Klopp has one of the most fearsome attacking units in the game at his disposal. The defense is led by reigning PFA Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk with world-class keeper Alisson Becker manning the posts.

Norwich City has spent the last decade as a “yo-yo” team, gaining promotion from the Championship to the Premier League three times in that span. The Canaries spent the last three seasons in the Championship, breaking through again last season by winning the league in splendid fashion. Using manager Daniel Farke’s possession-heavy, attack-minded system, Norwich totaled 94 points while scoring a whopping 93 goals.

The question this season is if Farke’s swashbuckling style can survive and thrive in the Premier League, where the teams are bigger, faster, stronger and tougher. And despite its brilliant performance last season, there’s plenty of reason for concern. While the Canaries’ offense was explosive, they struggled on defense and allowed 57 goals. Norwich also outperformed its xG last season by almost 20 goals, according to Opta, and it’s unlikely it can repeat that in a tougher match.

Liverpool stands as a clear favorite for this season opener, both because of the talent gap and because Anfield figures to be rocking as the Reds return home for the first time since winning the Champions League. Liverpool should win this match fairly easily. If it doesn’t, Norwich will have a newfound reason for optimism, and Klopp and his squad will already be a step behind Manchester City.
